How Wine Became Modern
Design + Wine 1976 to Now
Wine is a potent force in contemporary life, perhaps the only comestible to produce its own visual culture. How Wine Became Modern, the first exhibition of its kind, looks at the world of wine and the role that architecture, design, and media have played in its stunning transformation over the past three decades. Developed in collaboration with the New York architecture studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the exhibition features historical artifacts, architectural models, multimedia installations, newly commissioned artworks, and even a”smell wall” to provide a richly textured experience in the galleries. Come discover how important cultural preoccupations of our day, such as the meaning of “place” and “authenticity” in our increasingly global and virtual world, play out at this uniquely fertile intersection of nature and culture. At once a nuanced investigation and a vivid sensory and aesthetic experience, this exhibition presents wine as you’ve never seen it before.

Kathleen Wilke

Kathleen Wilke blurs the lines of poetry and fiction through her underwater photography.  Born in Youngstowni, and raised in Cincinnati Ohio, Wilke attended the Art Academy of Cincinnati and The Art Institute of Boston, where she majored in illustration and photography. Changing water effects illuminate the simplest subjects and transform imagery into beautiful, surreal and ethereal, painterly masterpieces.  Sometimes her subjects are so peaceful and almost appear to be sleeping.  Other underwater Wilke subjects are seen dancing and playing, with mischievous, provocative, and nymph-like qualities.  Yet other times, the viewer is directly transported into the thoughts and emotion of her characters.Wilke was first place winner in the Unscene Tour, 2008, a photographic competition generated in Los Angeles. Her images have been chosen for international publicity of each fair.  In May 2009, she was chosen as a recipient of the famed New Dallas Nine Award.

Kathleen Wilke currently resides in Dallas, Texas.

Artist Statement
In my practice, making art is as much directing intent as it is about scientific tinkering. All of my diverse work is linked by the transformation and manipulation of traditional materials and the exploration of non-traditional ones. The loss of an original and the use of elaborate processes are inherent to the creation of the smokes, paintings, and porcelain series. The work intends to both balance accident with control and give permanence to the ephemeral.

Bio

Julio Brujis is an artist from Peru who lives and works in London. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts where he was appointed the first fellow in digital technology. His work has been exhibited in the UK, Peru, France, Switzerland, Thailand, Japan and the United States.

Julio Brujis creates large-scale digital images of landscapes that are modified from an original panoramic view into an open, multi-horizon expanse. Touching on notions of illusion and representation, he questions our perception and traditional depiction of the landscape as two-dimensional image. These images of fantastic idealised worlds combine a sense of contemplation with an intriguing touch of vertigo.

Emil Alzamora

Biography

Emil Alzamora was born in Lima, Peru 1975, and raised in Boca Grande, Florida. He later attended Florida State University where he graduated Magna cum Laude in 1998 earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. Alzamora started his sculpting career in the Hudson Valley working with Polich Art Works in the fall of 1998.  Since his departure from P.A.W. in early 2001, he has produced his work full-time and shown regularly through- out the United States and Europe.  He currently lives and works in Beacon, NY.

Artist Statement

The human form is a constant within my work. I often exaggerate or distort itto reveal an emotional or physical situation, or to tell a story. Limitation and potential are as human as the flesh, yet hardly as tangible. In my works I strive to make visible this interaction.

CV
Graduated 1998 Magna cum Laude with Bachelor’s of Fine Arts
from Florida State University. Minor in Art History.
