CHRIS DEAN

ARTIST STATEMENT

I work almost exclusively with lenticular printmaking, a process that creates illusionary qualities of depth and motion on a flat two dimensional surface. The effect is similar to holography but works through the use of a carefully designed surface overlay that directs imagery to a viewer’s eyes in particular patterns. The same underlying principles are shared by 3D movies and Viewmasters but lenticular has the benefit of not requiring glasses or special viewers to see its effect.

My interest in lenticular is related to a general curiosity with optical illusions I have had since I was a kid. Black light art, gestalt images and the vibrating shapes and lines of op art were all extremely captivating. The intrigue was probably similar to my feelings about magic at the time with its suggestion of a world beyond the ordinary. As a teenager I made my own illusionary artwork and in college discovered stereoscopic processes like anaglyph. My thesis show was a series of large anaglyph prints, each accompanied by a pair of red and blue 3D glasses. The evolution to lenticular was natural and I developed an understanding of its qualities and explored a variety of approaches for making lenticular work.

My aesthetic and conceptual interests are rooted in art that leans towards the psychedelic, with bright colors, a busy canvas and a curiosity of subjects difficult to pin down. I favor internal observation over cultural critique, things that look like religion but have no theology. I like art to be shaped with intention, a core of something personally felt, without excluding the possibility of the uncontrollable or unforeseen playing a role.

My process for making work is a winding road. It may start with an idea and find an approach or the approach might reveal a path over time. It might include complex arrays of synchronized cameras or simple sumi-e ink paintings. Since lenticular is a container of sorts it can accommodate a variety of mediums and methods for creating visual content.

The lenticular process itself has creative variables, some obvious and others subtle and indirect. Recognizing which ideas are capable of making good use of these qualities is a fundamental task and the obvious goal of any work. Ideally there is an active partnership between the concept and the medium so that there can be no separating the two. Unlike some of the illusionary mediums that intrigued me as a child, lenticular is not a one trick pony. Its under utilization leaves large stones unturned, making it exciting to work with and play a role in its unfolding history.

Yok started his droopy eyed drawings in a salty sea shack down under in a town called Perth.Where he developed a passion for loopy moustaches, seaworthy beards and an an obsession with gargoyles. Loving the basic idea of Gargoyles- being placed on buildings to ward off evil, he adapted this thought and reinterpreted them in his own style to be painted on walls around the world.
Currently Yok works from a home studio with Sheryo in Brooklyn, New York and is open for
collaborations, commissions and cases of beer.

He has exhibited in Berlin, New York, Tokyo, Sydney, Taipei, Beijing,

Magic Straw. In modern arts, the material has greater significance than any other times. As modern arts can be expressed as the war against materials, the material is important in modern arts. In particular, the materials in the cubic work in which the property of the matter is emphasized play more special roles. Thus, it is natural for the material itself to become the artistic work. From this perspective, the works of Sang-Sik Hong built with straws are very interesting. It seems to be insufficient for the material as it is easily bent and delivers very little sense of mass. Then, why should the material be the straw? To this question of his material choice, Sang-Sik Hong answered simply by saying “if you rub a section of the noodle, the noodle pushed out of the other side makes all kinds of shape through the undulations. This childhood play was the beginning of my work”. However, the material ‘straw’ chosen from his childhood play shows noticeable characteristics in his works.

First, the plenty of straws cumulated to shape a figure create a space image in the opposite side segmented as an infinite circle by being penetrated visually through the empty structure, Furthermore, since each of the segmented spaces contained in the straw hole embraces its own space like the camera lens, thousands of spaces are accumulated in his work. Beyond the general definition that the cube is the art of space, his work consists of the assembled individual spaces. This is the result of combining the perfect understanding of the characteristics of the material chosen by the artist and curiosity stemming from the childhood play, which is the attractive visual entertainment.

Second, a circle-shaped visual point is formed at the place on the surface where the eyes reaches. This point is linked not only to the shadow more highlighted than other surface but also to the penetrating background to display the background color as it is spread out. This interesting phenomenon seen like aurora or moire creates a pleasant visual effect to change the location as the spectators change their location to watch it. This phenomenon makes the spectators naturally change their location, which creates an interesting scene in which the spectators move and walk around the work. The fact that the basic material ‘straw’ suggests the possibility that it can induce more efficient interactions between the spectators and the work than the media arts using electronic sensors allows us to invest Sang-Sik Hong with the icon of ‘straw’.

If there is only form of immersion into the material without contents, it will not be sufficient enough. If there are contents without form, it will be insufficient as well. The aspects of form and material were reviewed in the above. Thus, the question is raised naturally out of the curiosity regarding whether the contents are well balanced with them. We may watch only the surface of the straws cumulated plainly on the white, even and low-relief surface of the work. The images built as if they show the contour lines with the subtle undulations by the white or single colored straws are revealing the figures sometimes clearly or secretively depending on the view point. The representative images include the lips, chair, high-heel, woman in nude and flower. All of these may be the representative symbols of desire. Thus, they are unconscious intention and interest of the artist even though they are all unintentional.

Connecting the symbolized images such as chair, female’s genital looking flower, lips and body to the symbolic meanings (power and sex) will reveal clearly that his interest is focused on the desires.

● In particular, the cubic chair the artist presents as his representative work for this exhibition is built as a life-sized complete cubic shape rather than half-relief shape. The details delineating the volume of the cushion at the back of the chair even makes the spectators forget that it is made of the straws. Why is the chair made of straws? The ‘visual paradox’ symbolizing the power represented by the chair with the weak, feeble and easily available straws is an important clue to read the artist’s contents in his work.

● Although every one desires power, only a few of people can have it. Power is the symbol of strength and the object for one’s wish since it accompanies many interests. Power is strong, scarce and heading toward eternity. However, the straw, contrary to the properties of power, is a weak structure, easily available to anyone for it is produced on a large scale and a disposable material. The motive of his works is to create various meanings by connecting the contradictory networks of meaning. The special taste is the works of Sang-Sik Hong lies in the process to expand the surface meaning of the material to the paradoxical symbolic meaning creating various meanings. His whit to symbolize the semantic relationships and the structure of desires connotes the pathos of reality.

● In addition, the plenty of straws constituting the lips in the work ‘Sucking’ is telling the present progressive form of our desires that we have progressed in the past and will progress in the future. The desire in the work “Peeping” to recapitulate the peeping eyes can be interpreted as our self-portraits to enjoy many visual objects for desires. The artist seduces the reality in conflicts with the desires that plays more strongly as we try to dilute them in his works like plays. Since the seduction provides the opportunity for philosophical and meaningful thoughts, it is not difficult but pleasant for fresh interpretation. As the feeling we can get from an essay written by well-connected words, his work delivers the feeling of visually fresh essay in which each point of the straws are well connected with each other.

● By realizing more advanced cubic and details beyond the relief in his works, he shows his fresh attempts to go beyond the limit of the materials and to implement various experiments using the lightings. But, it seems he needs persistent efforts to maintain the balance to avoid the reduction of the contents and meanings by excessive ornamentation. In particular, as the play becomes dull when you get used to it, he needs more research on the contents and meanings. These sense of balance and efforts will make his works differentiated from others compared to the sophisticated ornaments or objets.

● Through the many straws located naturally depicting the free contour lines in the exhibition space, various desires and flavors can be tasted. In addition, it is the magic of Sang-Sik Hong indulged into the straw play to watch the self-portrait confronting the desires.

According to trendwatchers, 3D-printing is the next big thing: in the near future, every household will own a printer that is capable of printing digital three-dimensional objects into a physical object. In the process that is best known under the name ‘Additive Manufacturing’, a 3D-printer builds up a model layer by layer by selectively hardening liquid or powder.

If this powder is a plaster-like material, a model can be directly printed in full color. The 3D-printing of delicate and colored models is far from being just pushing a button, but requires great technical skills. Therefore only a few specialize in this technique and there is no artist who pushes the boundaries colorized 3D-prints as far as Eric van Straaten.

There is no technique that is capable of achieving such a great degree of hyper(sur)realism as 3D-modeling. At the same time, 3D printing is the only technique with which virtual models can be made actually physically touchable. Physical expressiveness in form and content is the biggest strength of the work of Eric van Straaten: while the sculptures remain to have a certain digital feel to them, the pieces contain a weirdly eroticized corporeality. Balancing on the edge of kitsch, the marzipan-like quality of the material resonates beautifully with the apparent innocence of the scenery.

For Van Straaten, the focus on girls on the threshold of adulthood reflect both my own obsession and that of contemporary western civilisation with (frozen) youth. What this focus means for the development of young girls toward womanhood, is painfully described by Mary Pipher in her book, Reviving Ophelia; Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls. By using different accessories, companions and scenery, I try to transform the Ophelia-figures into Nemeses (not in the sense of archenemies but in the sense of the Greek goddess Nemesis, the spirit of divine retribution against those who succumb to hubris: arrogance before the gods). I believe that Vladimir Nabokov, when he coined the name in his controversial novel, meant his Lolita-figure to be a similar figure: a creature that turns on its maker.

New York City based artist HANKSY uses the streets as his canvas, employing clever puns and turns of
phrases to delight fans and observant passersby.
Shortly after moving to New York in 2010, HANKSY began noticing the city’s vibrant street art scene, in
which hand painted works of art, elaborate stencils, and detailed screen prints enrich blighted spots and
capture the attention of urban dwellers. Wanting to contribute to the ever-growing movement, but
determined to maintain a light-hearted approach, HANKSY began satirizing British street art legend
Banksy by mashing up his most famous works with references from Tom Hanks films. His clever remixes
delighted New Yorkers, turning HANKSY into a social media phenomenon and quickly earning him a
place in the competitive New York street art world.
HANKSY’s new work broadens his satirical scope, lampooning pop culture icons like Bruce Willis and
Ryan Gosling, while staying true to his punny origins. With HANKSY on the streets, no celebrity is safe.

Stephan Zirwes Vita and statement

Hanging out of an open helicopter hundreds of meters above the ground, German born
artist Stephan Zirwes composes his graphical abstractions that challenge the viewers
perception of actuality.
While at first glance the images seem digitally manipulated, a closer look reveals they are
In fact untouched reality. On a surface level the pictures allow an unemotional, aesthetic
View. From Zirwes perspective. As the viewer digs deeper political and socio-critical
themes emerge. Capturing images all over the world, he lets the borders between reality
and fiction disappear.
