Artist Statement:

Stephen Eric Lee (E.LEE) is a conceptual artist who uses absence as an active material. Working across painting, object-based, and site-responsive projects, he removes or disrupts familiar forms to reveal the structures that shape perception, belief, and value. Humor and cultural recognition act as entry points, drawing viewers toward moments of realization where meaning is exposed as something constructed rather than inherent.

Lee’s work often begins with recognizable objects that are subtly altered through reduction, repetition, or displacement. These shifts create a tension between what is seen and what is understood, inviting viewers to reconsider how context and attention assign meaning.

Lee earned his BFA from Millikin University in 2002. His work has been exhibited internationally, including Chicago, New York, Miami, Atlanta, Paris, and Brisbane, with public works installed across the United States, Europe, and Japan.
